About Dr. Hans Castelijns

This site created by Hans Castelijns, farrier and D.V.M., is dedicated to farriery and equine podiatry.

Hans Castelijns lives in Tuscany - Italy and works as a farrier and veterinarian in different fields of equine podiatry which includes thoroughbreds, standardbreds, Arabians, foals and yearlings at breeding farms, showjumpers, reining horses, and trotters.

His fields of major interest are:

foal development
diagnosis and treatment of lameness particularly as related to the foot.
preventive and therapeutic shoeing technique.

Besides his practical field work, he partecipates as speaker at:

farriery and veterinary conferences,
laboratories and clinics;
various professional training courses.
and teaches at the Veterinary faculty at the University of Perugia - Italy

He formerly wrote a monthly farriery article for the equine publication "Cavallo Magazine", and is a contributor to the European Farriers Journal. Occasionally he works as a consultant for members of the farriery industry.

In collaboration with Paolo Valiani (owner of the agriturism center Il Frantoio Cortona, Arezzo - Italy), he manages an equine recovery and rehabilitation center for horses suffering from severe-medium to long term pathologies such as laminitis.
